Aquafin collects water of municipal sewers in collectors. These collectors carry the water to the treatment plants. The water gets treated so it can flow to creeks and brooks nearby, not endangering life in those waters. Throughout Flanders, Aquafin contributes to a healthier environment for future generations.
Expanding, maintaining en replacing the Flemish wastewater treatment infrastructure is a job we don't take on on our own. Each year Aquafin brings hundreds of projects to the market for technical partners and suppliers. This joint effort pays off. The quality of the waterways in Flanders has improved tremendously over the past twenty-five years.
Every day Aquafin treats up to two billions liters of waste water, after skillfully transporting it through 5000 kilometers of collectors. Our knowledge of the entire wastewater cycle is strongly appreciated by our research partners and the Flemish water sector. And of course by dozens of young people running internships at Aquafin. The actual treatment work is done billions of micro organisms which are added to the waste water, under close supervision of our technical operators.
A living environment in harmony with water demands a smart approach towards rain water. Several clever and impactfull measures can be taken by households. However, for waterproof cities and municipalities, most efforts are to be realised on public domain. At the request of municipalities, Aquafin produces stormwater plans that are fully tailored to the specific local situation.
